Whether you are transitioning, or already natural lots of people struggle with figuring out when to trim their ends.

There are 3 things that I look for, and keep in my whenever I am deciding if I need a trim or not.

Throughout this  blog post I am going to be using two different terms, dusting and trimming.

Dusting- lightly snipping bad ends, this can be 1/2 inch to a full inch.
Trimming- Done once a year (my preference), purging all of my bad ends usually 2-3 inches or more.

1. The appearance of my ends. If I am doing my hair and I can noticeably see my ends getting straggly or splitting, then that is when I will go in and give myself a light dusting.

2. That time of the year. I only trim my hair once a year and that is in December. So once it gets around that time then I know that its definitely time for a good trim. Most people will straighten their hair 2-3 times a year, but it is just your preference as to what you want to do and what your ends are looking like.

3. When doing my hair, I pretty much know the ending result every time. Whether I am doing twist outs or wash and gos I know that my hair is always going to curl and have sometime of definition. Whenever I notice my results not coming out as defined, or my ends getting super dry, then I know that it is time for a trim. Depending on how bad they are I will either do a light dusting or do a full trim.

As you learn more about your hair, deciding when to trim will become more apparent.
